Study Task 04 - Summarising and paraphrasing

where next for the fashion magazine?

by Felix Petty

The number of magazines sold in 2015, was down 15 million on the number sold in 2014. And that's following on from a 2014 when, year-on-year, Glamour was down 2.5%, Closer was down 11.8%, Cosmo down 9.8%, Marie Claire down 13%, Grazia down 6.4%, Elle down 4.4%, GQ down 2%, Vogue down 1%, FHM fell 20% before being closed (according to MediaWeek's ABC circulation figures). 2015 looks like it will be about the same for the industry's large publishing houses. In America, Condé Nast is streamlining, Hearst are investing in e-commerce and start-ups. Few are registering growth, less are increasing profit.

My Interpretation

Another aspect of the article discusses the drop in magazine sales. “The number of magazines sold in 2015, was down 15 million on the number sold in 2014.”
Here are some figures of the decreasing print sales of some suffering magazines in 2014.
“Marie Claire down 13%,
Closer was down 11.8%,
Cosmo down 9.8%,
Grazia down 6.4%,
Elle down 4.4%,
Glamour was down 2.5%,
GQ down 2%,
Vogue down 1%,

FHM fell 20% before being closed…” (F. Petty, 2015). These figures prove that people are seeking out other methods of collecting knowledge, instead of heavily relying on print media.

"What is the role of print media in the digital age?"

WHY PRINT MEDIA IS STILL RELEVANT IN THE DIGITAL AGE

By Aislinn Barry

"Over the last 10 years print media has lost ground in the digital media boom, facing competition from smart phones, iPad, internet, social media and many other digital media. The recent annoucement of four large daily newspapers, including the New Orleans Times-Picayune, cutting back to less-than-daily frequency while boosting digital efforts, is yet another of many examples."

"Although print has declined, there is still a need for print in marketing and advertising. cmyk Print media is tangible, portable and moldable, it can be carried with a person without the need of technology. A person can feel the texture of the paper, turn the pages of a magazine, see the brilliant colors shine on the page of a high-gloss photography book. Paper can be any size, shape or color, it can enhance an idea and become a work of art."

Thoughts

  • showcases need for print (positive), whilst successfully manages to examine the decline and increase in the use of the web

Is Print Marketing Obsolete in the Digital Age?
By Angela Stringfellow

“There are certain industries, serving a specific demographic, that will always appreciate and need a tangible representation of a product, service or company," - Jennifer Fuhrman, marketing executive with Chicago agency Marketcity

“Digital and traditional now mix well together," - Grensing-Prophal

"Many industries still benefit from direct-mail campaigns"

Study Task 03 - Reading and understanding a text

Chosen question - "What is the role of print media in the digital age?"

The Word of Art in the Age of Digital Reproduction (An Evolving Thesis: 1991-1995)
By Douglas Davis

1) Tone-of-voice: What can you deduce about the authors position in regard to the subject matter from their tone-of-voice.

  • critical language
  • very opinionated - constantly comparing designer's ideas and concepts with his own
  • quite informal at times - use of ( ) to express thoughts
2) Key points that the text makes.

  • Idea that print media will always be around
  • Original vs Copy
  • The future of the digital age and what it can bring to the design world
3) Key quotes from the text.
  • "I am not predicting that our culture will entirely embrace the purely technocratic meaning of the digital world."
  • "endless reproduction of a painting or a photograph would diminish what he called the 'aura' of the original."
  • "Let anarchy thrive. Let our voices be freed from control, so that in interaction with each other, new modes of thinking, artmahng, and deep personal touching can occur."

Study Task 02 - Finding research sources

Research

a) Books - "How to Thrive in the Digital Age" by Tom Chatfield

Chapter 1 - From Past to Present

Gives a good insight into the journey of print to a more
digital based world.

b) Google Books - "Print Is Dead" by Jeff Gomez

Interesting article about how the fashion industry has been affected by the digital age.

- not academic

- gives a different perspective
- includes statistics, quotes and general observation the state of magazine

Summary

From trying out a few various ways of collecting information and useful research I can use for my essay, I found the best
method for me was using google books. This way I can easily search through the pages for key words without having to
waste time. There are many books available, however, not all are fully uploaded so I may struggle finding books with full
content.

Study Task 01 - Image Analysis

The Uncle Sam Range (1876) Advertising Image by Schumacher & Ettlinger, New York.

(source one)

Initial observations

  • Propaganda "Uncle Sam's Little Dinner Party"
  • List of countries/foods/products - suggesting America are feeding the world? or are the world feeding them?
  • Oven/stove - selling product - purpose of poster?
  • Slave worker at the oven - represents social hierarchy at time
  • Uncle Sam character's body is turned away from Africa globe figure
  • The globe figure that represents Africa has been given a immature strange looking face - could represent America's opinion of the continent and its people at the time
  • clock could represent 100 year mark of Independence
  • Cultures and regions brought together, American displayed as the most relevant and domineering
  • Women serving food - represents their position in society at the time and what they were expected to be

East African Transport Old Style & East African Transport New Style (1930-1931) Adrian Allinson from the 'Colonial Progress Brings Home Prosperity' series of poster.

(source two)

Initial observations

  • Rural
  • Women presented as strong (leading) - would make men feel uncomfortable at the time - women were not seen as leaders
  • Faces of people appear angry - could be to represent them as being wild, aggressive or unwelcoming - the enemy???

  • 'New Style' - representing the intervening of white people in East Africa?
  • Faces of the natives look tired, exhausted, irritated? No longer strong independent characters
  • Turned into slave/workers - aggressive nature has been 'tamed'?
  • Transport introduced - shows the difference of the times between posters

When observing both images it is stereotypes built in by society at the time are evident.  Source One demonstrates the hierarchy of men and women, women being the stereotypical cook/stay at home wife who is attending to the table. In Source Two white people are demonstrated as the more superior race, who are capable of suppressing another race, although it is portrayed as a strong and positive trait. In contrast, the old style poster represents the african natives as strong, powerful, independent people who are interestingly mostly led by women. This was probably illustrated to appeal to those who agreed with the social hierarchy in the 1930's, showing black women as the leaders would have been controversial and the new style poster completely shows what they would expect. Most likely done so the audience would agree even further with the new style or believe the vision it is providing.

Furthermore,

false security/knowledge

a)     The choice and organisation of font and style of illustration
b)    The purpose and meaning of the image
c)     The target / potential audience of the image

d)    The historical contexts relevant to the production of the image
