Neutral Culture

The rise of neutral culture

The idea of 'neutral culture' – where you no longer target or market to an individual through their demographic, gender, age, culture and so on – is slowly trickling down from industries like fashion into advertising and design. Now, it's about psychographics: mindsets and behaviour.
However, The Future Laboratory team were disappointed with the abundance of traditional messaging seen across the entries to this year's D&AD awards. "A lot of the films and campaigns we came across were very much empowering women or showing a different side to males."

Casestudy contacts

These are the creatives I've contacted in effort to received some insight into their work that could benefit my research for my essay and practical work.

All of these creatives explore themes within gender identity that relate to my research.

COP Question Presentation, Notes and Feedback

Slide 01: Question

  • Discuss my chosen question
  • According to a 2015 pol 50% of people in the UK believe gender exists on a  spectrum
  • Last decade attitudes towards the acceptance of gender within a spectrum have shifted
  • As a result of this it is effecting the way in which some people are designing

Slide 02: Themes

  • Gender Identity - what it mean for creatives today
  • Gender Stereotypes - looking at the negatives/positives of how it is still used today in design
  • Masculinity/Femininity - researching into how these influence designer's outcomes
  • Androgyny - the way in which masc/fem qualities within design are blending together
  • Pop Culture - how gender has been used as a tool to sell
  • Feminism - looking at how feminist designers use their gender as a tool to design
  • Gender Neutral Design/Neutral Culture - in contrast with the feminism behind gender forward design, comparing it with genderless design - looking into the argument of whether we should express ourselves through gender or design for no gender in mind at all

Slide 03: Case studies

  • Design Studios - contact studios with a survey/questionnaire on their practice and whether gender is factor that consider when designing or themselves or a client
  • Interview Creatives - who have based projects around gender and interview them on their reasonings behind their design decisions

Slide 04: Practical

  • Gender Neutral publication following the theories and design methods with the influence of no gender

Slide 05: Extended Practice

  • Talk about my collaboration with Tommy (London fashion student) on my photography publication that is focusing on the masculine/feminine qualities of men
  • Collaborating on the visuals, fashion garments and modelling

FEEDBACK

  • Narrow down my question by specifying what practice I want to focus on... whether it be graphic design or a practice within graphic design
